Strand is a coastal town situated on the eastern edge of False Bay at the foot of the Hottentot's Mountain.  It lies just between Macassar and Gordon's Bay in the Western Cape and is about 50km south-east of Cape Town.   Strand has a pristine 5km beach with soft white sand.  It is an excellent wave riding spot which is shared by surfers, kitesurfers and bathers. The ocean can get choppy but is flat between the waves. The waves range between 1-3m.  There is a swell 150m offshore close to the reef.   Strand is a good spot for beginners to advanced riders, although beginners should watch out for the bathers and surfers downwind.  The Lifesaving & Kitesurfing Club have officially zoned the kiting area on Strand Beach due to it being extremely crowded on the beach and in the water, which can lead to serious accidents.  Kiting is only allowed between the marker flags on the beach area in front of the Strand Hottentot's Kitesurfing Clubhouse on the Main Beach.  This is right next to the Lifesaving Club.   The wind is good all year round but best from November to March on a southerly or south west direction. The predominant wind direction in summer is the Cape Doctor's SE which can be dangerously gusty and NW in winter which can also be gusty at times.

The closest Airport to Strand is the Cape Town International which is approximately a 35km drive.  Car Rentals are available at the airport.

Facilities At Strand, S.Africa

The beach is 50m wide and therefore has ample space to rig up your gear, launch and land. As mentioned before though, the beach does get crowded.  The Strand Hottentot's Kitesurfing Club is situated on the Main Beach at 186 Beach Road.  The closest shopping centre is in Somerset West.  There are a number of activities in the area such as swimming, fishing, kitesurfing, surfing and visiting the wine lands which are just around the corner.  There are a few upmarket and family restaurants and fresh fish can be bought directly from the fishing boats.  Guest houses are priced reasonably and the Seabreeze Strand Self Catering is recommended.  It is 400m from the beach and a 5 minute walk to the shops.
