Sauvie Island lies approximately 16km northwest of Portland, Oregon and is accessed by a sole bridge from US 30. The island is situated between the Columbia River to the east, the Multnomah Channel to the west, and the Willamette River to the south. It is an island so large it has its own rivers, lakes, islands, and sloughs.   Sauvies Island also known as Reeder Beach is a super kitesurfing spot for beginners to advanced riders.   You can rig up your gear on the sand or grass, the beach is long and sandy and 36m wide. It can get crowded in summer. Summer temperatures are an average of 24C.   The best months are from May to September. The E and W winds are steady at 16 – 25 knots but can blow up to 40 knots or more. Be careful of the currents, boats, driftwood and other water and beach users.   The chop is small and is usually not more than 1m.

Traveling to Sauvie Island, Columbia River, Oregon, USA

The Tri-Met bus #17 travels to Sauvie Island; or, parking is available at foot of the bridge on east end.  If you are driving or biking please beware that the island roads present some unique challenges.  The nearest towns to Sauvie Island are Scappoose and Linnton and the closest city is Portland.
