About Lancelin, Western Australia
In Western Australia, 100 km north of Perth, you will find Lancelin, a small fishing village and now tourist hot-spot.
Lancelin is a semi-bay/sheltered beach offering shallow, flat-water sections close to shore, with breaking waves further out to sea. There are a couple of decent reef breaks producing excellent waves on the outside, which can get quite busy.
Visit from November to March to catch the reliable southwesterly coming from the Fremantle Doctor or ‘Freo Doctor’ - the name given to the cooling afternoon sea breezes that occur along the southern coast of Western Australia in its summer season. This wind system builds throughout the day, offering perfect conditions from midday onwards. Lancelin is an ideal location for kitesurfers wanting both flat water and waves.
The water temperature varies from season to season. During the summer months you will be fine in board shorts, but in the winter a full wetsuit is needed. Traveling to Lancelin, Western Australia
Lancelin is about 130km from Perth airport, where there is a bus service and taxis. However car hire is probably your best bet, as having your own means of transport when in Lancelin does open up other possibilities. The drive there will take about an hour and a half, if you follow highway 60 north. Facilities At Lancelin, Western Australia
Lancelin has been a tourist destination since the 1940s, so there is plenty of accommodation here, and you can choose between hotels and guesthouses, all very close to the beach. As well as the kiting and windsurfing, Lancelin is a diving hotspot. Due to its many reef systems, there are huge amounts of fish to see, plus there are also 14 shipwrecks along the coast. Just 4km in land, there is the Pinnacles Desert, where stone monuments rise out of the sand like the remains of an ancient city, giving wonderful views over the surrounding area. If you fancy keeping your feet in foot straps, and are up for a challenge, then the 2km of sand dunes behind the town are a Mecca for sand-borders. The best times to go are at sunrise or sunset.
