About Hermanus, S.Africa
The beautiful seaside town of Hermanus is known for its amazing land-based whale watching and scenic beauty. Hermanus is situated between two large lagoons, with a smaller lagoon in the middle. The pristine stretch of beach is popular for kitesurfing.
Hermanus is perfect for beginners to advanced riders. You can learn to kite in the lagoon or pratice your wave riding skills in the ocean. The water in the lagoon is waist deep and warm in summer. The SE is steady and consistent in summer and can blow up to 25 knots everyday. It does tend to get gusty towards the afternoon. The SW on the lagoon is gusty and not recommended but is awesome for wave riding out at sea. The swells tend to close in but can get massive at times. The wind is usually weaker here than in Cape Town, you get the odd 30 knot days, but not often, which makes it a perfect learning spot. 9-12m kites are generally seen here. The wind is good all year round but best from September to April. Join the locals for a 15km down winder from Hawston to Kleinmond.
